Museum's youth programme scoops award

17/04/2013

ServiceIQ, the new Industry Training Organisation that offers skills training to the Museums sector, was proud to sponsor the Project Achievement Award for Public Programmes at the 2013 New Zealand Museum Awards.

The award was won by the Auckland War Memorial Museum for its URBANLIFE project and presenting the award, ServiceIQ CEO Dean Minchington said it was a great example of a museum being innovative to attract visitors.

“This programme invited young Aucklanders to create a multi-media exhibition which reflected New Zealand youth culture and showcased it to the world.”

ServiceIQ has strong working relationships with key players in the sector including Museums Aotearoa, Te Papa National Services Te Paerangi, and many other museums and galleries around New Zealand.

These places enrich our communities by protecting our history, educating our people and showcasing our cultural identity to locals and visitors.

There are around 3,500 people currently employed in museums and many more who volunteer their time.
ServiceIQ develops and facilitates on-the-job training that has tangible positive impacts on these people and their workplaces.

It also develops training in the aviation, accommodation, hospitality, retail, tourism, travel and wholesale sectors.

The New Zealand Museum Awards were celebrated in Hamilton as part of Museums Aotearoa's MA13 conference, Leading Museums, held over 10-12 April.

The judges were so impressed by the range of public programme projects entered in the awards this year, that this new category was created.

The winner is chosen for an outstanding new museum programme that contributes to best practice in the museum sector in Aotearoa New Zealand, and demonstrates community engagement, responsiveness and collaboration.

Judges said all the finalists achieved these requirements but these came together with great effect in Auckland Museum's URBANLIFE project.

This youth outreach project generated a series of engaging interactions between the museum, its collections and young people from communities across Auckland, bringing in new energy and broadening access to the institution.
