Aeromotive Limited

31/10/2014

This commitment to training was recognised when Aeromotive won the inaugural ServiceIQ Award for Excellence in Training at the Aviation Leadership Summit.

Aeromotive’s business units cover the spectrum in general aviation maintenance and repairs, for both fixed wing and helicopters. Safety, Quality & Risk Manager Stephen Burrows says the business uses the combination of a variety of work, and its commitment to training, to recruit specialists with the right stuff.

“We made a commitment years ago that we are going to train our staff from the ground up. If you’re not investing time in training people the industry just runs out of skilled engineers. We can’t just go down the road and find people who are suitably trained.”

The aviation sector is strong on industry qualifications. Aircraft maintenance specialists must show competence in both knowledge and practical skills before they are allowed perform a specific task. Aeromotive has developed its own training programmes, and these link closely with ServiceIQ’s aviation industry qualifications.

“We’ve created our own three-tier training system within the organisation. Tier zero is basic induction training; tier one is trade qualification assessments and HSNO requirements; and tier two covers Civil Aviation Authority licencing where people qualify to perform maintenance or release an aircraft for service.”

Steve says staff are encouraged to include ServiceIQ qualifications in their training. The company also assists by covering the cost of exams and training materials.

“We have got diversity in the business group. We do everything from process work right through to specialist fields like avionics, propellers, rotors, engines and more. Having all those diverse avenues creates the perfect opportunity to train people in various areas. It makes them better engineers because of that exposure to different roles. That’s a great incentive for any young person interested in aviation.”
