New research benchmarks the service industry

18/07/2014

New Zealand’s service industry sectors come under the microscope in a series of economic data reports published by ServiceIQ.

The 11 Sector Profile Reports make up a uniquely detailed analysis of the current state of our service industry and make predictions for future trends, which were used to inform a Workforce Development Plan for the service sectors.

The reports, prepared by Infometrics, use census and other data to measure the employment numbers, economic contribution, and future prospects for each service sector. While the data is compatible with other industry data, the series also makes some detailed analysis that has not been done before.

The eleven sectors covered are: Accommodation; Aviation; Cafes, bars & restaurants; Clubs; Food Services; Museums; Quick service restaurants; Retail; Tourism; Travel; Wholesaling.

Each Sector Profile Report is available as a downloadable PDF from the KnowledgeIQ library.

ServiceIQ Chief Executive Dean Minchington says the scale of the research project is a first for ServiceIQ. “It’s a considerable body of work and sets a valuable benchmark of the services industry and its place in the economy.”

While the main audience for the research data is the service industry, its employers and providers, the information would also prove useful to Government, Councils, researchers and academics, Minchington said.

“The project’s goal was to produce a robust, up to date, and comprehensive understanding of the 11 sectors we work with. It focuses on the people and businesses currently in the sector and includes an outlook of what the future might hold for each sector.”

“Our service industry sectors employ 563,000 people and contribute $36 billion dollars to the economy every year, and have above-average growth. The service industry is also a relatively young one, with nearly a quarter of workers aged between 15 and 24.”

ServiceIQ has also launched its first Annual Report, which is also available for download.
