New Pathway for Security Professionals: Level 4 Qualification Now on the Job

28/04/2025

Security professionals in Aotearoa now have a new opportunity to advance their careers without stepping away from the frontline.

The New Zealand Certificate in Security (Intermediate) (Level 4) is now available as an on-job training programme. While this qualification has existed since 2017, the ability to complete it in the workplace is a significant development for both employees and employers across the sector.

This Level 4 qualification is designed for those aiming to move into leadership roles — including supervisor, team leader, and operations manager positions. It provides the skills and knowledge to manage security teams, respond to incidents, apply risk management processes, and ensure compliance with legal and health and safety obligations.

Employers like Allied Security see this qualification as a practical way to build leadership capability from within. With over 100 staff having completed or currently enrolled in the Level 3 programme, many are now eyeing Level 4 as their next step.

“We want to be ready,” says Nicky Eastwood, National Training Manager at Allied Security. “Many of our people are setting their sights on Level 4, and it’s great to now be able to offer it on-job.”

Because the training happens in the workplace, learners can connect the qualification directly to their daily responsibilities. This relevance makes the learning more effective and better aligned with real-world needs.

“Staff can relate the qualification requirements to what they do each day — and specifically to our industry,” Nicky says.

Support systems are flexible, allowing staff to train around shift work and other commitments. Employers and training providers are working closely to offer tailored learning support — from study groups and Zoom sessions to one-on-one coaching and phone support.

With its focus on leadership, compliance, and incident response, this qualification offers a clear and supported pathway to progress in a vital industry — while staying on the job.
