Gateway students discovering healthy futures in pharmacy

28/04/2025

Aotearoa’s pharmacies are more than just a place to pick up a prescription – they’re the frontline of our healthcare system. And thanks to the Healthy Futures Pharmacy Gateway Programme, secondary school students are getting the opportunity to experience that vital role first-hand.

In partnership with ServiceIQ, Green Cross Health is opening the doors of their pharmacies to senior students through the Gateway programme. It’s a chance to step into the world of pharmacy retail – gaining real-world experience, learning from qualified teams, and earning credits toward a nationally recognised qualification.

“We want to give young people the chance to see how rewarding a career in pharmacy can be,” says Dianne Sherrock, Learning and Development Manager at Green Cross Health. “It’s a great opportunity to work in both retail and the dispensary and see how we care for our communities every day. Pharmacy staff are often the first point of contact when someone is unwell, and that’s an important, respected role.”

Students in the programme gain credits towards the New Zealand Certificate in Retail (Level 2), and that’s just the beginning. Their new skills and experience open the door to further study – even a pathway into becoming a qualified Dispensary Technician.

“We’ve already seen students go on to paid employment with us after completing Gateway,” says Dianne. “That’s incredibly satisfying – not just for the students, but also for our teams who’ve helped them take those first steps into a meaningful career.”

The Gateway programme gives students a taste of real responsibility – helping customers, following health and safety practices, and learning how pharmacies operate day-to-day. It’s not just an insight into the world of work; it’s a boost in confidence, capability, and connection.

“Being part of a pharmacy team is special,” adds Dianne. “You’re helping people every day, and for many students, that realisation is the start of a whole new future.”
