Years of training and commitment paid off with a gold medal each for Jacklin Pillay, chef at Urban Soul restaurant in Auckland; and aircraft engineer Christopher Robertson of Ohakea, NZ Defence Force.

The pair were part of New Zealand’s 23-strong WorldSkills team who over three days  challenged 102 international competitors from Canada, India, Malaysia, China, Australia and Korea.

WorldSkills is an international competition showcasing the superior skills of young tradespeople. The world final will be held in Sao Paolo in August.

In New Zealand, ServiceIQ supports three of the categories including Aircraft Maintenance, with Cooking and Restaurant Service receiving additional support from the Hospitality Training Trust.

In the Restaurant Service category, Kassey Samuels, NZ Defence Force won silver, as did Liam Riley of Whenuapai, NZ Defence Force for aircraft engineering.

ServiceIQ Chief Executive Dean Minchington said, “It’s fantastic to see young New Zealanders crafting promising careers and reaching the top of their game with real skills and knowledge. As the Industry Training Organisation for the service industry, ServiceIQ has the vision of a world class service industry through qualified people. We congratulate our medal winners, the winners in the other categories, and all the competitors.”
